EV from Chinese giant GAC targets quality, safety and mid-market value
The Aion V is the European debut model of one of China’ s lesser-known, local-government-owned car-making operations, Guangzhou Automobile (GAC). Although not nearly as large, GAC is notionally similar to MG’s parent company, SAIC. It has had particular domestic success with EVs, and also learned plenty from several long-standing joint ventures with PSA, FCA, Honda and Toyota.By 2030, we’re told, Aion will have eight models in UK showrooms – among them EVs, PHEVs, range-extenders and regular hybrids. It’s already doing business in Portugal, Poland, Finland and Greece, and now arrives over here with a mid-sized and perhaps unexpectedly mid-market electric family SUV.
