Chunky 4×4 revives a classic nameplate as it finally evolves from concept into production car for 2026
Toyota has revived the historic ‘FJ’ nameplate for the long-awaited ‘baby’ version of its flagship Land Cruiser 4×4, revealed today in production form ahead of a launch in Japan next year.
The chunky, Defender 90-sized off-road SUV was first revealed as a concept in 2021, but the company has since been tight-lipped on plans to put it in showrooms. Now it has revealed the final car and confirmed it will hit the roads in the middle of next year in its home market.
Measuring 4575mm long, the FJ Cruiser is around 350mm shorter than its full-sized namesake, and lines up neatly as a rival to the entry-level Land Rover Defender 90.
Full specifications are yet to be revealed, but the company has confirmed that it is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder, rather than a pure-electric powertrain as had been previously suggested.
